Commented On: Are Diesels The Future For Luxury Sport Sedans? Audi Says Yes

Since diesels are so great for hwy cruising and hybrids/EVs are great for local efficiency, why don't they build a plug-in diesel electric luxury segament?

GM already mentioned the possibility of putting a smaller version and/or 3 cyclinder engine in the next rev of the Volt or Gen 2 of the Volt.

Ecoboost is kind of "overrated" in my real world experience with it. Its "promised" MPG isn't all that and its performance is only average at best. That is based on the real world experience of C-Max and Fusion with 1.6L and 2.0L ecoboost.

True, but most NIMBYs don't live in the "central valley" of CA (mostly Marin county). But I agree with your point.

$20 for 30 mins ride? Hard to believe. But if it is, maybe people will commute from LA to SF for work...

That is okay to a point. If you want to buy anything, doesn't matter what, needs a lot of "permits" and "studies" in CA. So, Elon will find out once he starts the construction.

"That depends on where you live...in CA premium gas is more than $4.25/gal."

Depending on where and when in CA. That above $4 premium doesn't always happen in CA. If you get gas in Costco, then it will be much cheaper..

Still, the math is off a bit with $4.40 math. That is just 10% difference.

I believe Mitsubishi skipped 2013 model year for the "i".

Commented On: Electric Car Prototype Can Run 12 Miles On Solar Power Alone

Green Car Reports 0 Views 24 comments
I like math, so let us do some math.

12 miles at 6 miles per KWh about 2x the current EV efficiency takes at least 2KWh. @ 200 Watts per square meter, that is either 10 hrs of sunlight on 1 square meter of solar panel or 5 square meters of panel for at least 1 hr.

So, in another word, the math doesn't add up.

Of course, they will probably claim that the battery onboard will store the "solar power" and then release it as needed during driving.

In that sense, then it is no different from any other EVs today that are powered by solar panels...

Get a subscription service going, charge a "bulk" rate for EV owners who want to charge away from the house. It will be no different from the bulk minutes that phone company is selling you or Netflix where you get to "watch unlimited" number of movies.

People buy "bulk" so "just in case"...

Of course, I agree that in order for that to survive, they can't compete against any "free stations"... As long as there are "free stations", the fee based ones will NOT survive.

$200 per round trip? @$4/gallon, that is 50 gallons of gas. Assuming 20mpg, that is 1,000 miles per trip. Assuming 50 mpg, that is 2,500 miles per trip.

Even at 2,000 miles round trip, 1,000 mile per trip, your 85KWh Tesla would need at least 300KWh (3.33miles/KWh). Even at $0.05 per KWh (half the rate of electricity cost in CA baseline), that is $15 about 3.5 gallon of gasoline cost. Even if you only paid the first 85KWh for each trip, that is a cost of $0.05 per KWh x 85KWh = $4.25 which is still more than a cost of a gallon of gas.

So, either you are getting a lot of "free charges" or the math is off somewhere...
