Commented On: EV Project Tells Us How Drivers Use Electric Cars

Green Car Reports 0 Views 16 comments
Going over the report, the EVproject is relying on a very small sample of vehicles. So they are not getting a clear picture of what we do. A dump for drivers to send vehicle data to would be much more effectual.
It would be great if driving an EV was a requirement as an employee of Ecotality/EVproject or at least drive one for a few weeks out of the year. That way they could make sense of their own reports.

Commented On: Japan's Electric Taxis Falling Out Of Favor With Drivers

My commute has been 50 moles one-way for the 17 months I've own my LEAF and my battery is still solid. I just did 80 freeway miles on one charge last week.

I now have 37,000 miles on my Nissan LEAF. Without details, this story is irritating at best. Having lived in Japan for a couple of years, I know that taxi driver there do not turn off their engines. Given that it is now winter, I can see how just waiting with heater use in 1st generation Nissan LEAF would have less range.
"15 minute charge is now a 40 minute charge" means nothing without knowing the state of charge upon completion.
I DC quick charge 3-5 times per week and have since getting the car, my battery is unaffected.

Commented On: Study: Chevrolet Volt Drivers Suffer From 'Gas Anxiety'

The Car Connection 0 Views 27 comments
As a LEAF driver, I notice that Volt drivers plug in more often. I, like Volt drivers, don't want to buy gasoline. I chose a LEAF because traveling 100% electric took precedence over the periodic long-range trip. I rent when I do that and I'm still way ahead financially with current gas prices.

LEAF driver here - Volt drivers hog-up the chargers. Someone needs to enable Volt's to utilize more than 10kw of it's 16 kw battery. All electric driving takes precedence over the periodic 'long-range trip' which is why I chose the way that I did.

I agree JP, I see this as a path toward grid-free living. It makes sense to purchase two 20 kw batteries with a solar and/or wind system for a home. As the prices for the large batteries drops, it makes even more sense.

2k max. I think that I'd rather put that same money toward a group purchase of CHAdeMO DC quick chargers.

If the Evproject had been executed as planned, the infrastructure would not be an issue now. I realize that people have been conditioned to tie their self-image to their car and they don't know what an EV identifies with. Even in this article there is an attempt to find the "reason" someone would buy an EV. After about a year of driving a Nissan LEAF, people that ride in the car like it, they know I drive it 2,000 miles per month. However they all have an emotional barrier to buying a car that does not burn gas.

San Fran to LA in a day is a charging infrastructure issue. After there are DC quick chargers on I-5 as we've been promised, it is a do-able trip in a Nissan LEAF.

Commented On: So How Many 2012 Model S Electric Cars Can Tesla Really Sell?

Green Car Reports 0 Views 25 comments
I predict Tesla hitting their sales goal this year and increasing sales after the smaller battery pack versions roll-out.
I talk to people that want an EV but have been waiting for the Model S because of their EV range-fear or problem with the looks or size of currently available 100% electric vehicles. I personally know of two people that do plan to purchase an S and one of them has a reservation. To compare, I didn't know anyone that had reserved a Nissan LEAF when it went to market. However, I and one family member have purchased LEAF's.
Tesla S expected reliablity is currently being based on the Nissan LEAF's and if it can meet that standard, it will capture those wait-and-see consumers after all reservations are filled.
