Great report, John! I'm with you and Tom -- this sounds a bit like a solution in search of a problem! Toyota and Ford are challenging the Volt with shorter range, not longer!
(By the way, I and others who drive Volts say it feels BMW-like in its power, in both modes.)
People who buy a BMW want its performance -- a "limp-home" mode doesn't really add much. And explaining this car will be agonizing. I hope BMW builds great EVs and PHEVs.

I hope it's a good compromise. It protects privacy, establishes that owners can access their data, and minimizes load on GM's servers.
