Commented On: How Long Will Your Electric Car Battery Last? It Depends Where You Live

Green Car Reports 0 Views 12 comments
Actually the Volt uses a different supplier, but essentially the same chemistry as the Leaf. But they are much more aggressive in NOT fully charging the cell and not allowing you to fully discharge it. This more than anything will lead to a longer life in the Volt. Their thermal management is pretty basic.

Hmmm, yes and no. IT depends on the specific chemistry involved, and most particularly the specific solvents used to carry the electrolyte. The Lithium Manganese Spinel cells used in both the Volt and the Leaf have thermal issues. LiFePo4 - Lithium iron phosphate cells are really quite good in the heat and their capacity actually increases. No doubt some loss of cycle life but an order of magnitude better than the Lithium oxide cells - cobalt and manganese.

The article is a little simplistic.

I've kind of got a long history of calling them right on technology Antony. Be not worried.

On the other hand, I've been watching YOU guys with reports of millions of OEM electric cars "right around the corner" for four years now. That you miss badly, repeatedly, and without ever stopping to question your very dismal record of prophesy is not precisely worrying. But it is comical and most entertaining.

Essentially ALL the startups you have reported in SUCH glowing terms have failed utterly. And to watch GM predict 110,000 vehicles a year, and YOU faithfully report the revision to 60,000 as an INCREASE and then duly report they "just missed" their prediction of 10,000 has just been a hoot. Nissan also in the hundreds still I see.

I certainly will. I would say there will be fewer than 100,000 from converters, and very possibly fewer than that from OEMs. That is BEV's. I have no interest at all in hybrids.

Hmmmm.... So what do these 180 or so conversion shops do? Shut down based on your article?

We have dedicated conversion parts on our web site. There's about 200 others of course. We also do a weekly video for about 110,000 of these guys.

What do we tell them? Antony said "don't bother"?????

Let's assume 90% efficiency, although I can assure you THAT isn't happening.

So I loose 10% of each 8.2 cent kilowatt hour. At 30kwh that's 24.6 cents each time I charge.

It takes me about 8 seconds to plug in my car. Is eight seconds of your time worth a quarter?. It's a little over $100 per hour.

Journalistic work avoidance. You raised a question and failed to answer it. So a billion cars in 2010 - how many by the end of 2011. Specifically when will 1.5 billion or 2.0 billion at current growth rates will occur?

Half done article...

There are a number of companies that have so far invested a bit of design work and a lot of press releases in their electric car line. Of course, that is a prelude to a few BILLION more in investment.

Along the way, do you believe that the sales numbers of the early to market pioneers, Volt and Leaf, will entirely escape them?

Might they then employ a bit of a cautious hedge? Hmmm... maybe ours will be more available LAAAATTTTEEEERRRR in the year....or......next.....or.......

Or should they prance right in to plunk down THEIR Billion dollar bet to be sure and not miss the bloodbath?

I see. So RANGE ANXIETY is REAL. And you know this and kind of sweat it out because you drove 40 miles and had 36 left on the gage?

Hmmm. That IS scarey. Wow. I don't think I would ever be able to face an electric car again. That had to be a TRAUMATIC event. And on your first week with an electric car at that.

Perhaps some counseling, some meds, a sympathetic ear to help you work through it? I know you'll have "issues" and I can empathize with your "feelings" but with time, I'm hopeful you can grows past this little set back.

Not to diminish the horror of what you've been through, but are you some kind of a MORON?

Or might it be that as the batteries get better, it would allow them to use fewer, drop the price, and still provide 100 mile range?

Kind of depends on what YOU want to pay for...
