I believe it's practical for electric buses. The Proterra has a 2-speed transmission and were working on a 3-speed adapted from a 6-speed Corvette.

Try this Model S on a 75% charge, M5 on a full tank.
Run back-to-back continual drags until one of them can no longer continue.
Who wins?

No DC charging?? BMW is this late to the party and they left that out and threw in a hobbled range-extender that only a lawnmower could love?
I was on the fence about this vehicle but not anymore - it's off the list.

It's a pity that Better Place didn't try or succeed in launching a large-scale EV taxi trial in NYC - what a showcase for electric vehicles and battery swap that would have been.
It probably would have cost no more than $10-15 million for 100 cars and the chargers, swap stations, and spare batteries to support them.

I'm not much bothered by the look; it's not bad at all and somewhat distinctive with being horrid.

But I agree about the range-extender; it's too heavy, weak and doesn't give enough range as the tank is also much too small.

I wonder why they couldn't do both; it's not as if the panels would absorb rainwater and the runoff would have to go somewhere.

With wind and solar, it's not an either-or situation in many places. Texas, for example, has lots of wind turbines but they also have terrific insolation but relatively little solar.
And wind turbines don't take up much space individually, which is why farmers like them - they can be paid for leasing some space and still grow crops.
