As an EV owner I am fine with this.

It is not taxes we are trying to avoid. It is using gasoline that we are trying to avoid.

$100/year is a fair rate that is consistent with (and probably lower then) what an average driver pays in state gasoline taxes in a year.

If MPG doesn't work for you...

How about $ per mile?

After 10,000 miles I averaged $35 for every 1000 miles (gas at $3.50 + electric cost).

A 50 mpg Prius at $3.50 per gallon would spend $70 to go 1000 miles, or twice the cost of what I spent in my Volt.

A 25 MPG passenger car would cost $140 to go 1000 miles, or 4 times the Volt cost.

A 15 mpg Pickup would cost $233.33 to go 1000 miles, or 6.7 times the Volt cost.

BUT..... It is not bad journalism reporting MPG....

MPG is an important number when calculating foreign oil dependency. Electricity comes 100% from domestic sources, while gasoline comes from over 60% foreign sources. So MPG tells you exactly how much foreign oil you are consuming.

One can never tell about a single trip..... Any number of factors including driving more uphill sections than downhill sections can affect the EV range on a single trip.

The idea of a range extender came from the EV1 which had a generator mounted on a trailer to charge the EV1's battery to allow the EV1 to continue to be tested 24X7 without having to stop and recharge. GM called this generator on a tralier a "range extender".

The only difference with the Volt is that they took that range extender off the trailer and put it under the hood....

I still say EREV is a better name, because all of the components are more like an EV than a hybrid. Here's a few examples:

-The Volt has no transmission. A direct drive electric motor powers the wheels. Hybrids typically sandwich the electric motor between the transmission and the ICE. Even when running on gas, the electric motor still powers the wheels.
Even at 100 mph, only the electric motor powers the wheels.
-The gas engine is not directly connected to the gas pedal.
-The heater/AC is all electric, designed to run without assistance from a motor or alternator.


These components are more like EV's than what you would find in hybrids, even the Prius PHEV.

I feel the same about my Volt.

It is the best vehicle I have ever owned......and have owned a BMW-3 and a hybrid.

With my hybrid, I enjoyed the gas mileage, but felt that the vehicle was under-powered. It never felt like a luxury car.

I never feel that way about my Volt. The combination of the smooth quiet ride, the performance and handling and NO TRANSMISSION. Its almost beyond compare.

Then there is the sport driving mode. Push a button and suddenly the vehicle has more acceleration. Its like having two different vehicles.

First Tesla, and now the Volt are proving that an electric drivetrain is more than just saving money on gasoline....

Yup. The Volt is a luxury car.....

I see no issue with using the Chevrolet nameplate.

The Corvette has a Chevrolet nameplate. If its a good enough nameplate for the Corvette, it is more than good enough for the Volt.

Actually, considering the Volt is not in full production, and only available in 5 states out of 50, the sales numbers are quite promising. Despite these limitations, the Volt is already in the top 3 in hybrid sales. That sounds pretty significant to me.

As far as the cost, no first generation product was ever priced for the masses. If we judged other products by their first 6 months sales numbers, we would not have cell phones , HD TV's or personal computers.
