This won't be the last halting of the Volt production line. How can a factory that produces so few cars make any sense? GM has only themselves to blame for the Volt's problems: "It's the car, stupid!" It's not a political thing, which has become the silly excuse to explain why folks don't want to buy a car worth $13K but which has a $42K sticker on the window. Low Volt sales? Gee, what a mystery.

Nary a mention of the dreadful Volt sales figures. The Volt continues in production only because GM can't afford to upset Obama and the vast amounts of company stock held (underwater) by the Feds. Crony capitalism, American style.

With intelligent folk like the Obamas buying the Volt, how can it lose? I notice that no mention of the dreadful Volt sales figures was made. Given his history of campaign promises, I wouldn't alert Chevy's sales force to expect another sale come November.

Half the cost of current lithium EV batteries is not $125. Tesla has the cheapest batteries and theirs run around $525 per kilowatt hour. I notice not one claim about when these batteries might appear, which tells me a lot. Toyota, who I do trust, is in collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology (about as prestigious an institution as one can find) and claims they will have a new battery in around 5 years that will cost 1/10th what
batteries cost nowadays. Ditto for DBM-Energy in Germany. That's where I would place my bets. Sorry to say that the slippery surface technology developed by MIT and licensed to A123 Systems,
is not going well - the surface clogs up over time. Beware statements from companies searching for investors.

While those emails are inaccurate in their details, they may be closer to the truth than the costs estimated here, which must be very inaccurate, as they ignore battery replacement and initial purchase cost. Last time I heard anything, GM personnel were claiming that the Volt battery pack cost roughly $14,000, which has to be close to correct, considering the high cost of the vehicle. The battery will likely last 8 years, making the battery replacement costs roughly $1750 per year, plus the cost of installation. Cost of ownership must also include the initial cost of the vehicle, which I estimate to be roughly $25,000 more than an equivalent gas powered econobox. I can't accept arguments claiming the Volt a cheap way to go. It ain't.

Manufacturers can print anything they want in some vehicle paperwork, but they should pursue a less passive attitude and send owners, now and future owners of their EV used vehicles explicit warnings via registered mail and require that the owner acknowledge that they are aware of this potentially catastrophic
issue of battery charge state. The real solution will be batteries that are more user friendly and not so fragile. No jury is going to side with the automakers on this issue as it now stands. The issue is simply too important for the automakers to stand idly by and attempt to make the owners the scapegoats for their lack of thoughtfulness. The EV world doesn't need this kind of publicity.

"Read the manual" is not a real good defense. Products should be engineered, if possible, so that they do not depend upon the owner having to do something. And don't expect that owner's manual to both be readable by the owner or even present with the car.Cars and owners manuals often get separated. If Nissan can eliminate the problem, then Tesla should also be able to do so.
The outcome of this can be economically catastrophic and thus deserves extra effort from the factory to insure that it never happens. Perhaps the owners should be required to sign an acknowledgment that they understand the issue. I will assume that things will now change for the Model S when it appears.

Hard to find a more pointless and invalid attempt to answer to a non-question that has no universal answer, only specific answers for specific examples of the two powertrain types. Tell me, which is more powerful, nuclear generated electricity or coal generated electricity? See, I can ask stupid questions just as
easily as anyone else.

Don't know why I can't find the Rawlinson engineering walkthru videos on the list - those are the best explanation of what the important components of the Model S are. Whether the touchscreen shows Google maps falls under the heading - who cares?

Apparently some confusion here - the reason for the roadster being next was due to the inability of battery prices to decline fast enough. Musk is saying that he was wrong : battery prices are dropping faster than the 6 percent per year he had estimated, making the $30K vehicle closer in the future. That vehicle has ALWAYS been Musk's main goal since he knows what many EV enthusiasts apparently don't realize : that a million EVs won't accomplish much of anything with respect to oil dependencies or carbon emissions. We need many dozens of millions.
