It's on pylons so its actual land use is minimal. It's an intercity system so there will be no further stops period.

Don't underestimate those NIMBY relexes;). Also I was thinking a bit broader than just the SF-LA stretch.

Fascinating concept. Sounds pretty claustrophobic but maybe people could put on special TV glasses that project images of wide open fields or something;). Maybe not a particularly pleasant experience for some but at 600MPh one would never have to spend too much time in these, which also solves the bathroom issue.

The main problem I can think of is the impact of this system on the landscape. Mounted on pylons it's like a continuous visual barrier snaking through the landscape like the Chinese wall. That's bound to trigger people's NIMBY reflexes.

I think Tesla realized early in the game that the sort of money people are willing to pay for charging will only cover a fraction of the cost of the network so in typical Elon Musk fashion that lemon was cleverly turned into lemonade: "Free for life". That's the sort of slogan that sells cars and saves a lot of money on marketing expenses. People pay for the network through a mark up on the cars part of which would otherwise have been added for marketing expenses anyway. This allows Tesla to build a systematically rolled out grid of Superchargers which will someday be a very valuable asset for the company.

@ CDspeed: I disagreed but I certainly didn't rate you down (up in fact to counter the though shall not question Tesla nonsense).

Another sign that Tesla's Superchargers will be the prevailing standard some day. It's rolled out systematically and its clear what will pay for them for now: car sales.

The rest of the field shows competing standards with the sort of output that's only fit for city EVs haphazardly rolled out by a myriad of companies who often have still to figure out how to make people pay for their services.

Maybe we can rest assured that Tesla made a cost benefit analysis for energy consumption with a clear outcome: the mirrors have to go.

The relative success of the Renault Twizzy in Europe indicates there is some sort of a market for vehicles like this. If the price fits the size that is and that's a big if.

So according to you the more an EV is based on existing ICE platforms, the more serious a carmaker is about them. Curious logic. Look at the current batch of compliance cars and note what they have in common...

If GM had bothered to develop a dedicated platform for the Volt it might have had some serious interior space rather than being mostly about hauling its own drivetrain. EG the BMW i3. Of course in a way the Volt was the ultimate compliance car developed with a firm eye on the government whose cash GM was well aware it would come to depend on some day when the Volt was being developed.
