About Martin Smith
Martin learned how to service a Mazda 13B rotary engine not long after his 12th birthday. Family and friends can wearily testify to his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things automotive, especially the exceedingly dull technical bits. Since then, he’s spent much of his adult life living abroad. After setting out from his native Australia 23 years ago, Martin has lived in Japan, Hong Kong and the U.K., earning his keep as an IT security specialist. This nomadic existence has often afforded him ready access to some of the most important and exciting auto events on the planet, including six consecutive Tokyo Motor Shows. He has known the joy and suffered the sweet pain of Alfa Romeo ownership, while his automotive obsession has led to “accidental” car purchases during late-night eBay shopping sprees. Now he’s based in Ottawa, Canada, working as a freelance journalist and studying on the fly to be the father of two-year-old Carey, who already shares his all-consuming passion for cars.
