OK, I admit it. I do like it. I'd never buy one, but I like it.

The Romulans have landed. They are looking for Captain Kirk. He was last seen in a turbo SRX shouting something about low airfares.

The irony is that this might actually matter a little bit, because there are probably some customers in Europe who will take their Panamera to the 'Ring.
But I'll bet none of those owners are very good drivers, and any pro could spank 'em in a Cobalt SS. That's the whole point here - a pro driver who's familiar with the track set these times, whereas most of us regular Joes couldn't even get close to 8 min in a GT2.
The ugly truth is that most of us lack the cojones to run a track like that at the speeds required to set a respectable lap time. Sure, we'll hold the gas down on the straights, but we'd be all over the brakes when a corner comes up. Or we'd smack it into a tree before getting halfway 'round.
Posting comments on a website doesn't make a pro driver out of any of us.

Fender gap varies widely on production cars. Some late model BMWs have almost no fender gap, especially at the rear where the wheels are tucked inside the bodywork.
My '85 Trans Am with the WS-6 package had maybe half the fender gap of the new Camaro I looked at the other day.
As BMW has proven, there is no need to have, or not to have, a fender gap on a production car. It's just a question of style. Trucks probably still need fender gap for off-road suspension travel, but cars don't.

Build it. It will sell as many units as Obama will let GM make. Right now they can't even make Camaros as fast as people are buying them. This is a huge image car for GM, and it gets them free advertising because the car mags drool all over it.
A 550hp Z28 would blow every Mustang ever built out of the water and remind everyone who really dominates the pony car wars when they want to. But make it handle better too; don't just add power.
Personally I'd never buy one. These things look great from a distance, but up close they are enormous. There's so much tire/fender gap on the Camaro that I could almost climb in there to inspect the shocks. They dwarf the 'Vette and the prior F-body design. And I'd rather drive a Pontiac Aztek than have to look at the hideous dashboard they put in the latest Camaro.
But still, build it. Lots of people love this car, and GM should use it to re-establish a good name for themselves.

I hate when the government goes deeper into debt by spending my future tax money, but I have to admit that conceptually this is a very good investment in the future of America and the automotive industry. (Two things I care a lot about!)
Will the execution be good enough to justify blowing billions of dollars? I doubt it, but we'll still make some progress. And we need as much progress as we can get.
Now, somebody please give Fiat a few billion to make the Viper fuel efficient! As wildly cool as Tesla's Model S is, it ain't got 600hp and thus it ain't on my shopping list.

This car won't save GM from financial doom. That was never its purpose. Only the end of the recession and avoiding bankruptcy can save them. Even the government recognizes this. The government!
What this car can do is help GM turn the technology corner to sell efficient vehicles. And to begin to rebuild their image as a company.

Please help me understand how Apple was the only company that made an effort to reduce the power consumption of its processors, thus bucking an industry trend.
If I recall, Apple merely made the decision to switch to Intel processors, thus joining the rest of the industry. Intel has been working to reduce power consumption for years, and the rest of the manufacturers - only recently including Apple - have benefited from their efforts. Apple doesn't make processors, do they?

Nobody could have predicted $4/gallon gas several years in advance with enough certainty to change the product portfolio for such a huge company.
Even if they could, they surely would not have predicted a return to $2 gas a few months later.
And if they had magically predicted those two things, there's no way they would have also predicted that Wall Street would have wiped out the stock markets, credit markets, and job markets around the entire world.
Try managing any company through times like these - it's incredibly hard. Now think about how long it takes to plan and design and build new cars: 3-4 years or so. In 2005 and 2006, were any of us shouting that GM should change the cars they build for the reality of 2009? No. Because none of us had any idea this was coming.
GM has made great progress - look at the CTS, the Malibu, the G8, the numerous hybrids they have on the road, and the Volt & Cruze coming up soon. Has the company made enough progress? No. Are they as good as they should be? No. But we shouldn't take away their credit for making the big improvements that were made.
They've got a long way to go, but they've come a long way too. I think they were on a good path (although moving slowly), and nothing scares me more than a government-run business.
Sayonara, Z06, ZR1, Camaro SS, G8 etc. We'll miss you!

These are great cars, and they're a huge improvement over the previous model.
But for $46k you can buy a used '06 or '07 Corvette Z06... It just depends on whether you want a pretty BMW or a near-supercar.
